Curriculum Overview

At RMS we strive to cultivate in our girls the skills of reflective and responsible learners.

Years 7 to 9 (Ages 11 to 14)

Year groups are divided into four or five forms with 20-22 girls in each. Year 7, girls are taught in forms initially, but are set for Mathematics and French.

In Year 8, girls are placed in two broad bands for English and are set for French and Mathematics. From Year 9 girls are set for English, French/Spanish, Mathematics and Science.

In Year 7 girls currently study English, Mathematics, Science, French or Spanish, Latin, Geography, History, Religious Studies, Computer Science, Physical Education, Art and Textiles, and experience Music, Dance, Drama, Food & Nutrition and Design Technology.

In Year 8 there is a choice of languages. All girls continue with either French or Spanish and they may also choose to continue with Latin or add Spanish, German or Mandarin. Girls who do not take a second language will follow an individual learning programme.

A programme of Life Skills (previously PSHCE) runs throughout Years 7 to 9.

Years 10 and 11 (Ages 15 to 16)

Girls take from nine to twelve GCSEs including the compulsory core subjects of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, a Modern Foreign Language and Double Award or Triple Science. In addition girls usually choose three options from Art, Business and Communications, Business Studies, Child Development, Computer Science, Design and Technology, Drama, Food and Nutrition, French, Geography, German, History, Latin, Mandarin, Music, Performing Arts (Dual Award), Physical Education, Religious Studies, Spanish and Textiles.

Every effort is made to keep these choices as open as possible and girls receive plenty of advice. Parents are consulted and a Handbook details course content so that parents are well informed. Very small numbers may preclude a subject from running. Girls choose their options freely and then subjects are divided into blocks.

All girls continue to receive Life Skills classes, including Careers guidance and Physical Education lessons.

The Art Department is a lively open environment with excellent facilities and committed teachers.  The School has a justifiably impressive reputation for its creative departments and you only need to wander the corridors or attend our annual exhibition to witness the sheer talent and imagination that our girls possess.   They are willing to take risks, challenge themselves and go that extra mile in their pursuit of success and we are immensely proud of the artwork and high results that are achieved each year.

In Years 7, 8 and 9, girls all have one double lesson for Art or Textiles a week (they do one subject from September to February half term, and the other from February Half Term to the end of the Summer Term)

Girls are taught to work in traditional media but we are continually teaching them to research and produce work using digital media.

Natural Forms



In Year 7, girls will learn skills such as:

  • observational drawing, with a focus on skills building, and mark-making
  • how to record artists’ research in their sketchbook, with a focus on content and introduction of specialist vocabulary
  • basic colour theory and its application in practical work;
  • repeat printmaking methods
  • basic ceramic techniques







In Year 8 girls will learn such skills as:

  • further developing their observational drawing skills using different media;
  • exploring how elements are put together to make more sophisticated outcomes
  • learning how to process materials and experiment with techniques;
  • building in confidence in recording research, developing more detailed analysis of the work of artists and making personal responses using specialist vocabulary




In Year 9 girls will learn skills such as:

  • drawing in one and two point perspective, including drawing and making architectural forms
  • approaches to sculpture
  • photography, digital manipulation and montage
  • using their sketchbooks to record, experiment and evaluate in preparation for GCSE







Fine Art is an option subject for GCSE and almost half of the year regularly choose either Art of Textiles as one of their options.  We run the two year AQA Fine Art GCSE which is a broad qualification that encourages pupils to explore themes and media in an imaginative and developmental way.  All pupils will be introduced to a range of techniques and processes in Year 10 including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, ICT manipulation and moving image.  In Year 11 they can begin to specialise in chosen media as they become more confident and skilled.  Much of the course is made up of practical work carried out within a sketchbook and on larger scale.  There is a written element that requires pupils to engage with the work of others and to reflect and evaluate on their own progress.

  • 60% of the final grade is made up of a coursework portfolio produced over two terms.
  • 40% is made up of an externally set project which runs from 1st January until the final 10 hour practical examination.

Extra-Curricular & Enrichment

There is an Art Scholarship available at 11+ for those who are particularly able. For more information, click here

We run a variety of creative clubs at lunchtime including Clay Club & Mural Club that are open to all girls in Key Stage 3. In addition we run an enrichment programme for those who are Able & Interested. There are also a series of Art & Community workshops throughout the year at weekends that offer parents and family of RMS girls to get creative too! In Year 7 all girls visit Tring Natural History Museum as part of their ‘Animals’ unit and Year 8 visit the British Museum to look at ‘Objects’. House Art is an annual competition that all girls enter and there is the opportunity to win a prize and earn Alphas (house points).  

Business Studies

Welcome to the Business Department at RMS. Our teachers are Mrs Bannister (Head of Department), Mr Bannister, Mrs Loring, Mrs Ralph and Mr McDonough. Business and Economics are taught to girls at RMS from Year 9 upwards.  In Year 9 all girls will be given a taster session on various aspects of business, in the higher years girls make a choice to study the subjects.

Key Stage 3 (Years 9 only)

In Year 9 girls will follow a course in Business Studies as part of the technology circus. This will give them an introduction to the world of business and will help them to decide if they would like to study this subject at GCSE or A level.  It is worth noting that girls do NOT have to study business at GCSE in order to take it as an A Level subject, although they will gain background knowledge that could be advantageous.

In the first instance girls will learn the basics of the following topics:-

  • The current economic climate
  • Taxes to be paid throughout a lifetime
  • Savings and investments
  • Mortgages and loans
  • The perils of credit cards

The girls complete a task on business ethics where they study a variety of companies and their approach to ethical issues.

They also have the opportunity to complete a project based on the marketing mix (price, product, place, promotion) of an existing product or planning an event and the various aspects that entails.

Key Stage 4/GCSE (Years 10 and 11)

Girls can choose to study either Business and Communication Systems or Business Studies at GCSE

Business and Communication Systems  Exam Board AQA

This course will cover the main elements of business theories and will encourage the girls to:

  • know and understand business concepts, business terminology, business objectives, the integrated nature of business activity and the impact of business on individuals and wider society
  • apply knowledge and understanding to contemporary business issues and to different types and sizes of businesses in local, national and global contexts
  • develop as enterprising individuals with the ability to think commercially and creatively to demonstrate business acumen, and draw on evidence to make informed business decisions and solve business problems
  • develop as effective and independent students, and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds
  • use an enquiring, critical approach to make informed judgements
  • investigate and analyse real business opportunities and issues to construct well-argued, well-evidenced, balanced and structured arguments, demonstrating their depth and breadth and understanding of business
  • develop and apply quantitative skills relevant to business, including using and interpreting data.

Careers Guidance

It is the role of the Careers Department to assist all students in the Senior School to consider their future Career options, to offer guidance and provide resources in order for them to make informed decisions. Mrs Isherwood is Head of Careers, and she  works closely with the Head and Assistant Head of Sixth Form to offer support to students as they make university choices and invites outside speakers to offer insights into various areas of employment.

In Years 7 to 9 students take part in careers-based workshops as part of the school’s Life Skills Programme.

In Year 10 students begin to take a more detailed approach towards considering career paths and to prepare for the next stage of their education. Students will have the opportunity to create their first curriculum vitae and learn about different areas of employment.

Year 11 students have the opportunity of work experience placements in a wide variety of fields. They gain valuable experience of both the application process and the world of work. Students can also take part in The Cambridge Occupational Analysts - Profile Aptitude Test, which matches them with a career area or specific job type.

All members of Years 10 -13 are able to drop in to see the Head of Careers or arrange a more extensive meeting for Careers guidance.

The Careers Department has forged links with a wide range of businesses including; Banks, Lawyers, Accountancy Firms, Fashion Designers, Engineering etc and has a network of alumnae in senior positions who assist the department.

Thanks to our School Librarian Mrs Guiney and her team, the Careers Department has recently received a makeover.  Here, students can research universities, all types of careers and training possibilities. Careers books have now been placed on the system and can be borrowed in the usual way. Mrs Isherwood's office is situated in the Resource Centre if students require any assistance.


Child Development

Welcome to the Child Development Department.  Mrs Sallans teaches Child Development to girls from Year 10 upwards

KEY STAGE 4/GCSE (YEARS 10 and 11)

The Child Development GCSE course helps pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of child development issues in a diverse society and enables them to work in a variety of contexts. Pupils will learn about family diversity in an ever changing society, becoming a parent, conception, pregnancy, development of a child from 0-5 years, support for new mothers and child care options, as well as diet, health and safety of expectant mothers, babies and infants.  During the course, there are opportunities to care for a virtual baby (which cries and needs care like a real baby), to visit our Pre School Ruspini House, listen to guest speakers including a midwife and Health Visitor, and there is a proposed trip to the Netherlands to visit a Fostering and Adoption agency and Nursery.

Assessment - There will be a research task and a child study to be completed in class as a controlled assessment and an exam at the end of Year 11.



Computer Science

Welcome to the ICT Department at RMS, headed by Mr Buddie.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9)

All girls in Years 7 to 9 study Computing.

Key Stage 4/GCSE (Years 10 and 11)

A GCSE in Computer Science allows students to write programs and to find out how computers work. GCSE Computer Science courses have been developed to help students gain the necessary knowledge so that they can be properly prepared for careers as computer programmers, video game creators and mobile app developers.

This is an exciting and challenging course for which students require no prior knowledge of programming. The course perfectly complements Mathematics due to the computational thinking required but would be well suited to students interested in all subject disciplines. 

Students studying this specification will learn how to:

  • create applications that run on mobile devices
  • create applications that operate in a web-enabled environment
  • learn how to create simple computer games
  • gain an understanding of the fundamental concepts around creating software applications
  • work collaboratively.

The course consists of three components, namely

  1. Computer Systems
  2. Computational Thinking, Algorithms and Programming
  3. A programming project.

Design and Technology

Welcome to the Design and Technology Department at RMS.  Ms Dines and Miss Duffin teach Design and Technology throughout the Senior School with Miss Brooks teaching in Year 7. The subject is a popular option at both GCSE and A Level. We are very excited about the department's expansion plans, which will be funded by the Campaign for Excellence, and look forward to being able to enhance our teaching still further with improved facilities and equipment.

Through a variety of creative and practical activities students are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making.  Students work within a range of contexts: domestic, cultural, leisure, industrial, and one-off and batch production manufacturing.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9)

Students within KS3 are taught the knowledge and skills to acquire the understanding to engage successfully and independently in the process of designing and making.

Each project is designed to identify and solve design problems in a variety of contexts.  Students will develop their own specifications and are encouraged to design innovative, functional and appealing products.  There is also an emphasis on the accurate use of specialist tools, techniques, processes and equipment including CADCAM.  Each project is tested and evaluated during and after completion.  Technical knowledge is fully imbedded into the KS3 curriculum and students learn about the properties of materials, the use of electronic systems and the use of inputs and outputs. Pupils also cover a section on the work of past and contemporary designers.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11)

Students within KS4 are taught Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Design and Technology

Students will be taught to understand and apply iterative design processes through which they explore, create and evaluate a range of outcomes.  Through creativity and imagination students’ will design and make prototypes that solve real and relevant problems. The material areas are timbers, polymers, systems, textiles, metals, papers and boards. The course covers a range of skills including industrial processes to shape and form materials into functioning products and include the use of quality control and health and safety.  Students also study the wider impact of design and technology on the world and its resources.

The assessment is by

  • Examination - 1 hour 45 minutes – 50%
  • Non- examined assessment (Investigation, design, make, evaluate) – 50%

Enrichment Activities

Relevant trips and visits are undertaken in the exam years. There are a range of clubs on offer, both at lunch time and after school which are organised to support either examination classes or for recreation. As a department, we are delighted to invite university students and subject specialists to come and visit us and support the girls' learning.

This is a particularly rewarding subject where the staff work tirelessly to enable students to learn and most importantly enjoy what they are learning



Welcome to the English Department at RMS. The English Department currently consists of eleven teachers: Mrs. L Adamson, Mrs. C Bomford; Miss M. Callow; Mr. S Dowds; Mrs. C Gardner (Head of Department); Ms. V Gunn; Ms R Hodgson; Ms. V Jones; Mrs. J McCurdy; Mrs A.M. McDermott and Ms. S Solomons (Second in Department).                                 

As teachers of English, we have the wonderful privilege of seeing the ways the girls light up as they explore the worlds that they are introduced to through their studies in our subject. 

Our excellent results reflect the real quality of the girls’ learning and their own hard work. We ensure that from an early age, girls take ownership of their learning and become independent thinkers as well as devoted students of language and literature. We believe in enjoyment and creativity as essential aspects of positive learning and aim to inspire girls through an innovative and imaginative curriculum. We do not separate ‘reading’, ‘writing’ and ‘speaking and listening’ into distinct units. Instead, these skills are fostered and refined throughout every single one of our modules, at all Key Stages. 

Girls are set in Year 9 to ensure that they are in the best possible environment for their learning. While texts may vary between classes, all girls will access the same curriculum throughout Key Stages 3 and 4.

We are continually reviewing and updating our practice in order to benefit the students and we enjoy adapting our teaching regularly in order to try out new ideas within the classroom.   


In 2016, our results for GCSE English Language were excellent:

  • 97% of girls achieved A*-C grades
  • 85% of girls achieved A*-B grades
  • 44% of girls achieved A8-A grades

In English Literature, the results were even higher:

  • 99% of girls achieved A*-C grades
  • 87% of girls achieved A*-B grades
  • 56% of girls achieved A*-A grades

Our breakdown of results, released by the examination board, reveals that we have once again outperformed not only the national average but also the average for "other similar centres" in both English Language and English Literature.

Well done to all the girls for their hard work; we are very proud of their achievements.

Associated Activities and Enrichment

Each year, the English Department organises an incredible range of trips, visits and events, both to support the learning within the classroom and also to encourage and foster the girls' enthusiasm for literature, reading, writing and drama.  The clubs and activities currently on offer include: Junior Debating; Sixth Form Debating; Creative Writing Master Classes; English Film Society; Reading Groups and English/History societies.  We also offer a programme of revision clinics to girls in Year 11 as extra support in preparation for their examinations.  

Prior to the summer holidays, all girls in Years 7-9 are given a summer reading challenge, encouraging them to read and review a collection of books before their return in September.

Each year, we organise theatre visits, days out to sites of literary significance, trips to lectures, poetry recitals and a day with the GCSE examiners for girls in Year 11. We also arrange workshops by actors and authors, dramatic performances within school and cross-curricular activities with other subjects.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9)

In Year 7, girls will study:

  • a world literature module
  • Shakespeare - either A Midsummer Night's Dream or The Tempest
  • a range of poetic forms and techniques culminating in the completion of their individual poetry anthologies
  • a modern novel
  • a drama text

In Year 8, girls will study:

  • William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
  • our "Inspirational Voices" module, which will introduce girls to a range of inspirational people through poetry, speeches, novels, autobiographies and even videos and social media from around the world
  • a magazine project, during which girls will create a unique magazine filled with different types and styles of writing
  • a complete Nineteenth Century novel
  • a more challenging drama text

In Year 9, girls will study:

  • William Shakespeare's Macbeth
  • a range of classic Gothic tales, leading to the creation of their own piece of Gothic fiction
  • analytical, interpretative amd writing skills
  • a novel
  • poetry
  • a spoken presentation

Key Stage 4/GCSE (Years 10 and 11)

The focus of study of English Language and Literature at GCSE is on interpretation and analysis, with the girls using the skills they have been developing in Key Stage 3, in order to analyse and evaluate both fiction and non-fiction texts across a range of genres.  There is scope for creativity and imaginative exploration through reading, writing and speaking and listening activities, including drama.

Girls will sit separate examinations in English Language and English Literature and will be awarded a separate grade for each.  We work with the AQA specifications for GCSE English Language and Literature.  There is also a separate Spoken Language Endorsement.

English Language

English Language

The English Language curriculum is comprised of two papers:

  • Paper 1 - Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing
  • Paper 2 - Writers' Viewpoints and Perspectives

Both papers are examined by final examination and there is no coursework component.

Spoken Language

This is a separate endorsement and does not contribute to the overall grade for English Language. Girls will be awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction for Speaking and Listening.  They will be asked to deliver one presentation, which will be assessed.

English Literature

The English Literature curriculum is comprised of two papers:

  • Paper 1 - Shakespeare and the 19th Century Novel
  • Paper 2 - Modern Texts and Poetry

Food and Nutrition

Welcome to the Food and Nutrition Department.  Mrs Clivaz is Head of Department, and teaches alongside Mrs Hardman.

We have two food rooms which are used to teach girls about nutrition and to develop their cookery skills. The School provides all the ingredients required.


RMS has two food rooms which are used primarily to teach girls cookery skills and Nutrition.  The school provides all the ingredients.

Girls have one double lesson of Food and Nutrition throughout Years 7 and 8. The girls learn about healthy eating and Nutrition in addition to learning a wide range of practical skills. In Year 8 the girls also learn a little bit about food science.

In Year 9 the girls have seven weeks of Food and Nutrition lessons. The focus is on wellbeing and the girls learn about energy balance and the energy density of foods. The girls continue to develop their cookery skills.

KEY STAGE 4/GCSE (Years 10 and 11)

In Year 10 & 11 we offer the AQA Food Preparation and Nutrition GCSE.

This course is a good option for students who enjoy cooking and have an interest in nutrition and healthy eating. The focus of this GCSE is on practical cookery skills to ensure students develop a thorough understanding of nutrition, food provenance and the working characteristics of foods.

There are five core topics:

  • Food, nutrition and health
  • Food science
  • Food safety
  • Food choices
  • Food Provenance

Pupils will cook a range of different dishes designed to re-enforce the theoretical knowledge and to develop a wide range of practical and organisational skills. 

The course includes two non-examination assessments, together worth 50% of the overall GCSE.  The first is a practical investigation which includes a written report, and the second involves the students planning, preparing, cooking and presenting three dishes.

There is also a written examination, also worth 50% of the overall GCSE, which is 1 hour 45 minutes in length and consists of multiple choice, short and medium length questions.

KEY STAGE 4/GCSE (Years 10-11)

Geography at GCSE enables students to study both the physical and human world around them and how these two elements interact with each other. The chosen syllabus helps students to understand key physical processes but equally asks students to consider how humans have attempted to alter these processes and the implications of this. The human environment is studied through looking at current examples of development matters and issues associated with the changing world in which we live.

From September 2016, the GCSE topics covered include:

Paper 1: Living with the Physical Environment incorporating the challenge of natural hazards, physical landscapes of the UK, the living world, and geographical skills

Paper 2: Human Environments incorporating urban issues and challenges, the changing economic world, the challenge of resource management and geographical skills.

Geographical Application incorporating issue evaluation, fieldwork and geographical skills.

Field Trips

Please be aware that GCSE Geography students are required, as specified by the examination board, to undertake two days of compulsory field work. The cost of the trip will be added to your school bill in the term the fieldwork takes place.  The cost of the fieldwork is not currently known but it will be approximately £300 in total. If these additional costs are likely to deter your daughter/ward from studying GCSE Geography, please speak to the Headmistress in confidence.

We also offer an overseas trip, which is currently to Iceland.


Welcome to the History Department at RMS! History is a popular and dynamic subject here and is taught by three members of staff: Mr Grogan (Head of Department), Miss Hughes (Mrs Eccles) and Miss Simmonite.

As a Department, we are totally committed to an extensive enrichment programme. In Year 7 all the girls go to St. Albans on a joint History and Classics trip, which involves visiting the Verulamium Museum and taking part in the Pilgrim Trail at the Abbey. In Year 8 the students re-enact a day in the English Civil War in period costume. In Year 9 the students go to the Black Country Museum as part of their work on the Industrial Revolution and there is also a trip to the battlefields in France and Belgium. In Year 10 the students visit the Holocaust Exhibition at the Imperial War Museum, while Year 11 go to the theatre to watch the play ‘Hitler on Trial’. There is also an overseas trip for Years 10 and 11 to Berlin.

There is a thriving History Society and History Film Club, which involves large numbers of girls from all year groups. History Society members have been on a number of excursions including a trip to the London Dungeons and visits to the cinema to see films such as Warhorse.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 - 9)

In Years 7, 8 and 9 the girls are taught in their form groups and the KS3 course largely follows the National Curriculum with some additional material. The approach is chronological, beginning in Year 7 with the Norman invasion of 1066 and ending in Year 9 with the Cold War. Key topics in Year 7 include:

  • the Norman Conquest
  • the Domesday Book
  • the Feudal System
  • the Black Death
  • the Peasants’ Revolt
  • the Magna Carta 
  • the Crusades.

Key topics in Year 8 include:

  • the Reformation
  • the Spanish Armada
  • the Gunpowder Plot
  • the English Civil War
  • the Commonwealth,
  • the Fire of London 
  • the Age of Discovery.

Key topics in Year 9 include:

  • the Industrial Revolution,
  • Empire

The department runs a number of competitions for the girls; in Year 7 there is a Castle Competition, in Year 9 a World War One Competition and for all the KS3 year groups an extended writing competition.  You can read some examples of students' book reviews here

Key Stage 4/GCSE (Years 10-11)

In Years 10 and 11 the girls who opt for History are taught in mixed ability option groups. We currently follow the OCR Modern World Syllabus which is based on four key elements:

  1. International Relations 1945-1975. The key topics involved in this are: The origins of the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis and Vietnam War.

  2. Germany 1919-1945. The key topics involved in this are: Weimar Germany, Hitler’s rise to power and the Nazi State.

  3. Britain 1890-1918. The key topics involved in this are: Liberal reforms, votes for women and Britain at war.

  4. Coursework on Russia 1905-1939. The coursework element involves the students writing a 2,000 word essay under controlled conditions. This follows a programme of study on Russia which covers such key aspects as the 1905 Revolution, Russia involvement in the First World War, February and October Revolutions and Russia under Communist rule.

Girls studying History GCSE from September 2016 (current Year 9 students) will follow the Cambridge International Examinations syllabus.  This syllabus provides an opportunity  for students to develop an understanding of the key historical events from the twentieth century which have helped shape our world today.

The content focuses on the following key questions:

  • Were the peace treaties of 1919–23 fair?
  • To what extent was the League of Nations a success?
  • Why had international peace collapsed by 1939?
  • Who was to blame for the Cold War?
  • How effectively did the USA contain the spread of Communism?

Study visits have always been an integral part of the GCSE curriculum; in Year 10, girls will be offered the opportunity to visit Berlin, and in Year 11 they will attend a theatre performance of "Hitler on Trial".


Welcome to the Classics Department at RMS.  Latin is taught by Mr Young (Head of Department) and Miss Rai.

KEY STAGE 3 (YEARS 7 to 9)

All girls are taught Latin in Year 7, and in Year 8 and 9 may choose to continue with their study, or may opt to learn a second Modern Foreign Language (Spanish, German or Mandarin) instead.

KEY STAGE 4/GCSE (YEARS 10 and 11)

The aims of the GCSE Latin course are to continue to develop skills in the comprehension of Latin for reading purposes, and understanding of the content, style and values of Roman civilisation, with particular reference to the first century A.D.

Pupils will be introduced to Latin literature, studied in the language in which it was written; for example, short selections from the works of Catullus, Vergil, Cicero and Pliny.

Students will take one language paper worth 50% of the GCSE, which will include translating a passage of Latin into English, and translating a small number of simple sentences from English into Latin.

There is also a prose literature paper and a literature and culture paper, each worth 25% of the GCSE.

Life Skills

Life Skills, previously called PSHCE, is an essential part of the RMS experience. There is greater emphasis than ever before on the School's responsibility to promote the personal and social development of girls and a recognition of the link between this and academic achievement. The aims of the Life Skills programme are to promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, emotional and physical development of the girls enabling them to become well-informed and active members of society. Girls develop, learn and explore their own value and beliefs, display a strong moral code and make responsible and reasoned judgements on moral, health and ethical issues.

They have the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which allow them to form positive relationships and show respect for diverse cultural traditions. Provision is coordinated through cross-curricular links with other subjects and additional curriculum experiences are provided by outside speakers' involvement in Life Skills days, assemblies, theatre and music groups, community projects and School Council.

Girls study topics such as Personal Management; Emotional Health and Well Being; Healthy Living; Drugs Education; Personal Safety; Sex and Relationships Education and Social Awareness.

Regular Life Skills evenings are also offered for parents based upon "hot" topics affecting young people today. Specific information and hand outs relating to these evenings can be downloaded via the Parent Portal.


Welcome to the Mathematics Department at RMS. We have 10 Mathematics teachers here: Mrs Cubbon (Head of Department), Miss Durnford, Mrs Young, Mr Broome, Mr Cox, Mrs Shah, Miss Cassidy, Mrs Brockie, Miss Bench and Mr Martin. As a department, we fully support the aims of the School and strive to create a suitable environment for all members of the school community to fully realise their potential in Mathematics.

We are committed to ensuring that the needs of all individual students are met. To achieve this aim it is important to provide a curriculum which not only satisfies the requirements of the National Curriculum but is seen by each individual student as relevant to her, builds upon her experiences and thereby, through appropriate challenges, allows every student to reach her full potential.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 8)

During Year 7 the girls are placed in bands for Mathematics to support their transition to Senior School. The curriculum will broadly follow the Revised National Curriculum, but more importantly will build on the girls’ existing knowledge and understanding. There is a substantial volume of content to be mastered and students will also focus on communicating their mathematical ideas clearly. Additionally, through their experience of investigations and ongoing problem solving activities, students will develop the confidence to apply their knowledge in solving unfamiliar problems.

Throughout Years 7 to 8 the girls are working through the National Curriculum, and by Year 9 they are already working on topics which are part of their future IGCSE.

Key Stage 4/IGCSE (Years 9, 10 and 11)

During Years 9, 10 and 11, the girls will be preparing for IGCSE. Current students are preparing for either the Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics Specification A (Linear). Additionally, some students prepare for the OCR Freestanding Mathematics Qualification (6993) which provides an enhanced foundation of skills for those considering Mathematics beyond GCSE.


In addition to teacher support both inside and outside lessons, the Mathematics Department put on two drop-in lunchtime clinics for KS3 and KS4. A HegartyMaths drop-in clinic runs each week open all students. Girls are regularly entered in the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Challenges at Junior, Intermediate or Senior level. For those who achieve very highly and qualify for follow-on stages such as Kangaroo or Olympiad papers, support coaching and encouragement are available. Teams are also entered regularly in the UKMT Team Challenges and the Year 10 Maths Feast run by the Further Mathematics Support Programme. 

Mathematics Extension Club is open to girls in any year group who enjoy the UKMT type activities and would enjoy more problem solving. In June of both 2016 and 2017 we have hosted two days of master class activities for Year 10 students on behalf of the UKMT. This event has been open to students from the local area and has included some of our own students.

Support and encouragement is also available for girls who wish to apply to competitive university courses with a substantial mathematical content.

At RMS, we understand the importance of communication in an increasingly globalised world and all girls study AT LEAST one foreign language to GCSE.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9)

In Years 7-9 girls are taught to love studying languages and are introduced to a range of learning tools which enable to them to take their learning home with them.  Through apps, games and websites, girls are able to continue their discovery of their chosen language, developing a love for the culture attached to the language whilst also improving in the four main skill areas - Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. 

Grammatical concepts and terminology are covered in depth which means that girls can build up their confidence when constructing their own ideas in the foreign languages.  Lessons combine group work with individually set tasks alongside plenty of peer assessment so that the learning within each class is a collaborative process.  All girls are expected to share their ideas and learning techniques for the benefit of all. 

In Year 7 your daughter will choose between French and Spanish as her core language, then in Year 8 will take on a second foreign language option which could be Spanish (if she opted for French in Year 7), German, Mandarin.  The school will make an individual recommendation for each girl.  PLEASE NOTE: if your daughter wishes to study French, she must choose this as her language option in Year 7 as she will not be able to take it up in Year 8 if she has not previously studied it.

Key Stage 4 GCSE (Year 10-11)

Building on the skills developed throughout KS3, all girls take at least one language for GCSE, with a group of keen and able linguists taking two, and consistently achieving high grades.  Clinics for core languages at GCSE level are organised on a weekly basis and all girls receive extra support from a native speaker language assistant. Girls study a variety of topics and a wide range of grammatical concepts.  Listening, reading, speaking and writing are all regularly practised throughout the course.


The Modern Foreign Languages teachers run a number of clinics in the lunch hour to support girls' learning and help catch up with any missed work.  There is also a number of extra-curricular clubs as well as celebrations throughout the year for various cultural events such as the European Day of Languages and Chinese New Year. 

There are regular trips to France, Germany, China and Spain for different year groups.  This year's trips include the Opal Coast and Alicante, where girls will experience a mix of intensive language lessons and cultural activities to help enhance their overall understanding of the language that they study.

Performing Arts

Welcome to the Performing Arts Department at RMS.  We are a vibrant and very busy department, and there are numerous ways you will be able to get involved, be it through Music, Drama, Dance or backstage at a production. There are six full time members of staff in our Department; Mr Hyde (Director of Performing Arts), Mrs Whitbread (Head of Music), Mr Brammeld, Ms Heaffey, Mrs Isherwood and Mrs Flatto.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9)

In Year 7 the forms are split into groups and girls rotate between two carousels (Art/Textiles/3D Studies, and Music/Drama/Dance/Combined Performing Arts), spending a quarter of the year studying each subject. In Years 8 and 9, Dance, Drama , Music and Performing Arts are taught in rotation, with a quarter of the year on each.

Key Stage 4/GCSE (Years 10 and 11)

The following GCSEs can be studied: Drama, Performing Arts Dual Award, and Music.

A GCSE in Drama offers girls the opportunity to study Drama and Theatre from both an academic and practical point of view. There is a balance of practical activities, including performance and exploration of texts and stimuli, and more formal evaluative writing which includes writing reviews of live theatrical productions, and analysis of playscripts.

GCSE Music is about making and listening to music. It covers performing, composing and appraising a wide variety of musical styles – pop music, world music and classical music. There are opportunities to use computers to compose your own pieces with music technology. The course is an enjoyable and useful subject both creatively and historically on its own, or as a step towards AS and A Level music.
All parts of the course cover four areas of study (Western Classical Music, 20th Century Music, Popular Music in context and World Music). Within these areas of study three set works will be studied by a variety of composers within the genre.

GCSE Music is offered both on- and off-timetable (after school and/or at lunchtimes)

Performing Arts Dual Award
This is currently a GCSE course which results in two GCSE grades (eg. A* A*) – it is taught in the same time as a single GCSE and is counted as only one of your options. This course is suitable for any girl who enjoys performing, particularly in drama and dance as the course covers both these art forms. It does not cover drama in as much depth as the Drama GCSE but it does allow you to take dance. It leads perfectly to Performing Arts A Level and gives you valuable life-skills in communication and presentation. It is also possible to include music, if you study a musical instrument or take singing lessons.

From September 2016, we will be offering a BTEC Level 2 Award (GCSE equivalent) in Performing Arts, which covers both Music and Dance. It is also possible to include Music in this. There are three units:

Unit 1: Individual Showcase
Unit 2: Preparation, Performance and Production
Unit 3: Optional unity (students choose from Acting, Dance, Musical Theatre or Musical Performance)

Physical Education

Welcome to the Physical Education Department at RMS.  We are a very busy department, as the School has a strong reputation for a wide variety of sports, and we frequently compete at district and national level in many sports.  The Department has eight members of staff:  Mrs Spendiff (Director of Sport), Mrs Pooley (Curriculum Co-ordinator) Miss Boddey, Miss Stanley, Mrs Booth, Miss Lusted, Mrs Marsh and Mrs Joyce.

The School's indoor facilities are superb, and the 200 acres of parkland are ideal for cross-country running and adventure-based learning.

Traditional sports including netball, hockey, swimming, gymnastics, tennis, rounders and athletics are taught throughout as well as sports such as volleyball, basketball, squash and sports leadership. Senior girls may also opt for more recreational activities such as salsa or streetdance. Girls are encouraged to take part in leadership and coaching activities and links with many external sports clubs provide them with opportunities to pursue their interests. Physical Education is offered at both GCSE and AS/A2 level.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)

Pupils have two double Physical Education lessons per week (2 hours 40 minutes).  We run an options programme where pupils choose their sports, giving them an option to experience different activities, and lifelong participation.

Girls will select 12 activities and spend half a term on each sport.

A GCSE (EDEXCEL) in PE includes learning about:

  • the structure and function of the human body
  • the effects of exercise on the human body and its performance
  • principles and methods of training
  • rules, tactics and relevant safety aspects of selected activities
  • aspects of personal health and hygiene
  • reasons for participation in physical activity
  • factors affecting a healthy active lifestyle

As 60% of the course is of a practical nature, it is anticipated that students will show, and continue to show, a keen commitment to school sport and ensure their cardio-vascular fitness is above average through regular participation in any form of aerobic training.

For students entering Year 10 in September 2016, the course comprises 60% theory application and 40% practical assessment, and the content includes:

Component 1 and 2: Examination (60%).
This is externally assessed through two written examinations covering Fitness and Body Systems, and Health and Performance

Unit 3: Practical Performance (30%)
This is not examined but is internally marked and externally moderated.  Students will be required to perform in three physical activities (from a set list) including one team, one individual and one free choice activity.

Component 4: Personal Exercise Programme (10%)
This is not examined but is internally marked and externally moderated. Students are required to produce, carry out and monitor a programme to develop a selected component of fitness.

Controlled Assessment:
The practical element is 40% of the final mark and requires pupils to demonstrate skills as a performer. They must offer one individual sport, one team sport and one choice (either team or individual). These are assessed during the course over the two years and by an external moderator.
The moderation is a day-long examination, when pupils may be compared with pupils from other schools. Pupils will also complete a Personal Exercise Programme project in a controlled environment during lesson time over a seven week period.

Sports Leadership Level 1 (Year 10)

The Level 1 in Sports Leadership is a nationally recognised award designed to introduce young people to the skills of sports leadership.

It is a practical qualification, where candidates need to demonstrate knowledge and understanding, mainly through physical competence but also through some written work. The course is divided into 6 units:

  • Planning, leading and reviewing a sporting activity
  • Developing leadership skills
  • Lead activities that promote a healthy lifestyle
  • Fair play in sport
  • The role of the official 
  • Opportunities in Sport and recreation

The course will run for two terms, during one of the students' weekly PE lessons. Students will have the opportunity to extend her leadership skills by assisting at extra-curricular clubs at lunchtimes and after school. Students will also have the opportunity to help in the Prep department and in local primary schools.

Religious Studies

Welcome to the Religious Studies Department at RMS. We are a successful and dymamic department, and we are very proud of a recent GCSE results; 93% of girls were awarded Grade A* or A, and 100% Grade A*/A/B.

Mrs Elder (Head of Department) and Mrs Baron are our teachers of Religious Studies

We help to stretch the girls through Philosophy Club, a student-driven discussion group, which covers a wide range of topics such as "What is beauty?", "Does an after-life exist?", "Which has more power - love or hate?", and other ethical dilemmas.

We also take part in national competitions, such as Nature's Art in Heaven and various essay-writing competitions, such as the Heythrope Essay Prize.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9)

All girls are taught Religious Studies from Year 7 to 9.  This covers an introduction to the six major world religions of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism, whilst encouraging the students to reflect upon their own world view. They also receive an introduction to religious approaches to environmental ethics, philosophy of religion and a range of different normative ethical theories.

Key Stage 4/GCSE (Years 10 and 11)

In Year 10, we study ideas about God, such as evidence for his existence, the problem of suffering and evil in the world, the nature of God and how he interacts with the world. We also look at aspects of religious experience, including how God is revealed and miracles. We study different attitudes towards life after death from religious and non-religious perspectives. The final unit ‘Science and Religion’ allows us to explore the different approaches to the origins of the universe and life.

In Year 11 we move onto moral issues, exploring religious responses to contemporary issues and the problems that our world faces, such as:

  • Matters of Life (surrogacy, fertility treatments, sanctity of life, embryology, transplant surgery, cloning, blood transfusion and human genetic engineering).
  • Matters of Death (role of the family and community in caring for the terminally ill and the elderly, use of life support machines, euthanasia).
  • Drug Abuse (legal acceptability of certain drugs, consequences of drug taking, use of performance enhancers in sport, debate about the classification of drugs).
  • Crime and Punishment (different types of crime, causes of crime, aims of punishment and alternatives to prison).
  • Rich and Poor in British Society (causes of wealth and poverty, responsibility towards the poor, role of the National Lottery).
  • World Poverty (the problems in LEDCs, global interdependence. Religious responses both in practice and teaching.)

From September 2016, the syllabus will change but this has not yet been finalised.  However, it is likely to focus on an in depth study of two religions and on the philosophical and ethical aspects of religion.

In Year 10, likely course content will be the Beliefs, Teachings and Practices of two religions.  This will include core beliefs such as God and enlightenment, life after death, creation, revelation and how we should live our lives, as well as practices including methods of prayer, worship , pilgrimage and religious communities.

In Year 11, the syllabus will cover Thematic Philosophies and Ethics to cover four of the following:

  • traditional arguments for/against the existence of God, revelation
  • religious attitudes to family and relationships
  • religious attitudes to war, peace and conflict, pacifism
  • religious attitudes to human rights and world poverty
  • religious attitudes to crime and punishment
  • religion and life, including attitudes to the environment, animal rights, the value of human life and its impact on issues such as euthanasia and abortion.

The study of Religious Studies at GCSE does not require any personal religious faith. It will teach students valuable thinking, writing and debating skills, as well as encouraging the use of empathy and evaluation as students learn how to construct arguments. 


Welcome to the Science Department at RMS.  The Department currently consists of 16 staff members across three subject areas:

Chemistry: Ms Bayne (Head of Chemistry), Ms Franklin (Chemistry Technician), Mrs Hawkins, Mrs Knight (Science Enrichment Co-ordinator), Mrs Timoney (Head of Faculty), Dr Uppal (Key Stage 3 Technician),

Physics: Miss Black (Head of Physics), Mr Dacanalis, Dr Lewis (Physics Technician), Miss Talipova

In Years 7 and 8 pupils are taught in form groups, following an RMS developed Scheme of Work structured around the Activate text books from Oxford University Press.

From Year 9, pupils follow the AQA Trilogy GCSE Course and are taught the three sciences separately by specialist teachers.

The Science Department is well-resourced and is set in its own purpose built building.  It has ten fully fitted laboratories and a designated ICT suite.  In addition, RMS is extremely privileged to be one of very few schools in the UK to have its own telescope and planetarium to support the teaching of Astronomy topics across the curriculum.

The Science Department runs a thriving Astronomy Club in addition to offering it as a subject at GCSE.

Enrichment Activities

Pupils enjoy further exploration of Science outside of lessons by engaging in the numerous STEM activities on offer. Science clubs leading to prestigious Crest Awards are offered to pupils at Key Stage 3. Our most able and interested pupils at KS3 are offered the opportunity to work independently toward a mini EPQ on a topic of their choice. With the support and guidance of our science teachers the pupils have presented exceptional work. In 2016 we took part in the Lunar Loan scheme which allowed the whole community to see Moon rock samples and meteorites.

Our pupils' passion for science is evident in the number of winning entries to national competitions, with pupils achieving Gold award in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge 2016; Silver and Bronze awards in the Chemistry, Biology and Physics Olympiads;  Silver and Bronze awards in Intermediate Biology Olympiad; first place in the Bill Bryson Science Prize 2015; first place in the Newnham College; Cambridge Engineering Essay competition 2015 and numerous successes in the Copper Development Association Copper competition including runner up in 2015. Pupils compete in the British Biology Challenge in Years 9 and 10 with increasing numbers of pupils achieving success in this national competitions year on year.

We have ever increasing numbers of pupils choosing to study science subjects at A Level and we offer personalised support to potential vets, medics and dentists with their application process, simulating a mock MMI (Multiple Mini Interviews) so pupils can familiarise themselves with the interview process they may face.

We enrich our curriculum by making use of the vast natural resources RMS has to offer, including pond dipping, visits to the River Chess, nature walks and independent study in the conservation areas. Pupils make the most of learning outside the classroom on educational trips, including lectures at the Institute of Education for the Sixth Form, visits to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich for KS3 and opportunities further afield such as CERN in Geneva and our Biodiversity and Conservation expeditions that have taken us to the rainforests and reefs of Indonesia and Mexico. Our popular STEAM Lecture Series welcomes scientists from local Universities who talk to pupils and parents at KS4 and KS5 on a range of scientific topics, promoting debate and discussion. Key Stage 3 Curriculum (Years 7 - 9)

Students in Years 7 and 8 have two double lessons per week in their form groups and study a wide variety of units covering the areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. At the end of Year 8, the students sit an end of KS3 Science test covering all work from Years 7 and 8.

By Year 9 pupils have three double lessons of science each week and begin to study the AQA Trilogy GCSE Science course where Biology, Chemistry and Physics are taught as separate subjects. This is in line with the current trend in Science teaching which allows more time for the GCSE syllabus. The lessons are usually taught by subject specialists and the pupils are put into sets.

An examination based on GCSE work in Biology, Chemistry and Physics takes place in the summer term. The students will then be set for Year 10 based on a combination of results from the above examinations and on teacher assessments of students’ abilities and attitude to their GCSE studies. Improvement targets are provided at every stage so that students can develop their understanding and use this to improve their performance in the future.

Key Stage 4/GCSE Curriculum (Years 10 and 11) 

At KS4 the timetable allocation is one double and one single period per week for each Science subject.

Pupils study the new AQA linear Science specification and we offer both Trilogy (Double Award) and Separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics (Triple) courses. All external assessments take place in June of Year 11 while practical skills are taught and assessed throughout the two-year course.

Astronomy GCSE is offered after school for pupils who want to study another science subject.

Revision/Study Support

All science staff are friendly and approachable and are more than happy to provide extra help to their students as and when required. Science clinic is available from Monday to Friday at advertised lunchtimes in the Science block. Pupils may also meet with subject teachers at other times, arranged in advance. Regular revision sessions are held for KS4 students whose GCSE examinations are approaching in addition to practical support sessions.


The Textiles Department is a lively open environment with excellent facilities and committed teachers. The School has a justifiably impressive reputation for its creative departments and you only need to wander the corridors or attend our annual exhibition to witness the sheer talent and imagination that our girls possess. Textiles at RMS is taught with an Art and Design foundation, and girls are encouraged to explore a range of Textile techniques to interpret their ideas. As a school, we encourage the development of the individual girl; through practical investigation, research and the development of ideas, they are able to become practitioners and Textile artists in their own right. They are willing to take risks, challenge themselves and go that extra mile in their pursuit of success and we are immensely proud of the artwork and high results that are achieved each year.

In Year 7,8 & 9 all girls have one double lesson of Textiles or Art a week, they do one subject from September until February half term and the other from February half term until the end of the Summer term. 

Girls are taught to work in traditional media but we are continually teaching them to research and produce work using digital media.

In Year 7, girls will learn skills such as:

  • Exploring ways to work with fabric from collage to print work.






In Year 8 girls will learn skills such as

  • Ways to further develop their observational drawing skills using different media.
  • Explore how elements are put together to make more sophisticated outcomes, including 3D work. 
  • Learn how to process materials and experiment with techniques.
  • Build in confidence in recording research, developing more detailed analysis of the work of artists and making personal responses using specialist vocabulary.







In Year 9, girls will learn skill such as:

  • Drawing in one and two point perspective, including drawing and making architectural forms.
  • Ways to further develop design work, in particular Fashion design using traditional and digital methods.
  • Using their sketchbooks to record, experiment and evaluative in preparation for GCSE.
  • Garment construction.  





Extra Curricular and Enrichment

There is an Art Scholarship available at 11+ for those who are particularly able.

We run a variety of creative clubs at lunchtime including Textiles Club & Textiles Clinic that are open to all girls; whether they want to create a bag, work on their practical skills or receive further support with their work. In addition we run an enrichment programme for those who are Able & Interested. There are also a series of Art & Community workshops throughout the year at weekends that offer parents and family of RMS girls to get creative too! House Art is an annual competition that all girls enter and there is the opportunity to win a prize and earn Alphas (house points).  


Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)

Textiles is an option subject for GCSE and almost half of the year regularly choose either Textiles or Art as one of their options.  

We run the two year AQA Textiles GCSE which is a broad qualification that encourages pupils to explore themes developing knowledge and understanding of Textiles and Fashion.  All pupils will be introduced to a range of techniques and processes in Year 10 including painting, drawing, printmaking, silk painting, batik, applique, digital design and print.  In Year 11 they can begin to specialise in chosen media as they become more confident and skilled.  Much of the course is made up of practical work carried out within a sketchbook and on a larger scale.  There is a written element that requires pupils to engage with the work of others and to reflect and evaluate on their own progress.

  • 60% of the final grade is made up of a coursework portfolio produced over two terms.
  • 40% is made up of an externally set assignment which runs from 1st January until the final 10 hour practical examination.
