Life Skills

Life Skills (previously PSHCE) is an integral part of the everyday life of our community at RMS.  Spiritual, moral and social values are promoted as girls are encouraged to develop self-discipline, self-esteem and mutual respect in preparation for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.  This starts with the youngest pupils in Reception right through to the oldest in Year 6, where some are trained to act as peer mentors who are known as “big sisters”.

Each form holds a weekly session of Circle Time and one class lesson per week is timetabled specifically for the coverage of the Life Skills curriculum.  Topics covered enable girls to:

  • develop confidence and responsibility and make the most of their abilities
  • develop good relationships and respect the differences between people
  • develop a healthy, safe lifestyle
  • learn to play an active role as citizens
  • understand change in relationships and physical changes as they grow older
  • think about financial needs in order to plan and budget and so learn to take responsibility for financial decisions
  • become involved in the life of the School and wider community by, for example, organising and participating in fundraising events for a wide variety of charities.
  • meet visitors who are invited to talk to pupils in School; trips are also organised out of school to reinforce and put into practice some of the work carried out in the classroom.  For instance, Pre- Prep learn how to cross the road safely and in Year 4 the girls visit Hazard Alley at Milton Keynes where they experience many different scenarios (in the home, at a building site, on a farm, by water, by a railway line and in a petrol station) to identify the dangers and to learn how to respond.  They are able to make a 999 call and practise putting their friends into the recovery position.

We strongly believe that, in order to help the girls to develop into independent, empathetic and responsible individuals, we adults need to be working closely with parents.  Regular sessions are organised to discuss a range of topics such as Friendships, Internet Safety and Bereavement.
